A Story of Islamic Embroidery

A Story of Islamic Embroidery in Nomadic and Urban Traditions at Gallery One, Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi, brings together more than 200 rare and majestic textiles, including a wealth of embroideries from Central Asia never before exhibited in the region, that permit visitors to explore the exchange of trade and culture across the Silk Road and beyond.

These works, with their kaleidoscope of motifs and colours, create a form of abstract art and testify to the role of Islamic women in creating an artistic tradition of great significance and beauty.

Man's Waistcoat - Photo

Fabulous embroidery is not just for women's clothes. Men's waistcoats (a long vest) were showcases for embroidery and ornamentation as they were intended to be left open in the front. Waistcoats were often made of a complementary / contrasting fabric to the suit they were worn with. This waistcoat dates to ca.1750-70.

This shimmering waistcoat would have been reserved for the most formal of occasions, possibly an appearance at court, and would have shimmered in the candlelight of the time. In addition, it would originally have been a very expensive purchase since it is woven entirely out of metallic threads, which was difficult to do - not to mention quite costly.

Rippon Boswell’s major Spring sale in Wiesbaden on Saturday 25 May 2013 included a very strong group of 13 Uzbek and Tajik suzani embroideries, several of which are consigned from a German private collection of long standing. The images speak for themselves, and confirm RB’s position as the major international outlet for the best and most beautiful of these 18th/19th century dowry hangings or covers from the urban centres of the Emirate of Bukhara.

Gold Thread Embroidery - Photo

Knotted gold thread embroidery, in general, is knitted with flat gold strips or silver flat strip. In the past, the high ranking lady in the court wore this kind of textile above their breast wrapper or their shoulder cloth.
