Man's Waistcoat - Photo

Fabulous embroidery is not just for women's clothes. Men's waistcoats (a long vest) were showcases for embroidery and ornamentation as they were intended to be left open in the front. Waistcoats were often made of a complementary / contrasting fabric to the suit they were worn with. This waistcoat dates to ca.1750-70.
This shimmering waistcoat would have been reserved for the most formal of occasions, possibly an appearance at court, and would have shimmered in the candlelight of the time. In addition, it would originally have been a very expensive purchase since it is woven entirely out of metallic threads, which was difficult to do - not to mention quite costly.

Doublet - Photo

This extraordinary doublet is one of only two surviving examples of its type from the 1620s. The only other known doublet of this kind is in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Made of luxurious silk embellished with pinking and decorative slits, this doublet followed a fashion that existed barely five years. Pinking, or the intentional slashing of fabric, was a popular decorative technique used to reveal colorful linings, shirts, and chemises. It is possible that this garment was constructed from silk previously pinked for another use as the pattern created does not follow the cut of the garment

Gold Thread Embroidery - Photo

Knotted gold thread embroidery, in general, is knitted with flat gold strips or silver flat strip. In the past, the high ranking lady in the court wore this kind of textile above their breast wrapper or their shoulder cloth.
Admire a sleeve fragment of ceremony robe (in late 18th-19th Century), using the same method as the knotted gold thread embroidery, in the 2nd gallery in the “Fashioning tradition: Queen Sirikit creates a National dress for Thailand.
